| Notes: | Jul 15, 08 - This coin is commonly identified by scholars as the "Widow's Mite" of the Bible.
ALEXANDER JANNAEUS was thrown into prison by his brother, Aristobulus I, and nearly starved to death. After his brother's death he became king and High Priest. He favored bringing Greek culture into Judaea and thus he supported the Sadducees. He produced mass quantities of small bronze coins that are usually identified with the Widow's Mite mentioned in Matt.12:42 & Lk. 12:59, 21:2. |
